Willmar, Minn. (May 3, 2018) – It’s official! According to the 2018 Lake Ice Out Dates” on the Minnesota DNR website, ice on Green Lake in Spicer is officially OUT! That is great news for the Willmar Lakes Area Planning Committee in charge of hosting the Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener.

On April 15th, members of the committee gathered for a photo during blizzard conditions on Green Lake, standing on 29” of ice. Today, only 18 days later, the ice is totally gone.
“The warm weather, wind, and rain all helped,” said Beth Fischer, Executive Director of the Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. “The prayers didn’t hurt either.”
The Planning Committee did have a back-up plan, but would have had to move the Governor’s Fishing Challenge and the Shore Lunch to a smaller lake, almost 11 miles away. Now, their plans are back on track, and back to Green Lake.
While much of the weekend long event is reserved for media and invited guests, the public is invited to join in the fun at a free community picnic and concert at “Rockin’ Robbins Fishin’ Edition.” That event starts at 4:30 PM at Robbins Island Regional Park in Willmar.

The Minnesota Governor’s Fishing Opener has been a tradition in Minnesota since 1948. It was designed to improve Minnesota’s economy through the development and promotion of the state’s recreational opportunities, especially fishing. The first opener was a cooperative promotion between the state’s resort industry, media, and public officials. Today, the emphasis is even broader. It celebrates the kickoff of the summer tourism season. The special partnership continues today with a promotional focus on a host community as well as recreational opportunities statewide.
