Ferry to Bridge

In 1856, Simon Stevens and Ferry Company installed the first swing-cable ferry across the Mississippi River in Clearwater, MN. The ferry was a flat-bottom, almost raft-like boat that swung on a rope and that brought travelers from one riverbank to the other. Today, a bridge stands in the former ferry route, but the memory is a unique one for locals and visitors alike.
